The Air Force’s inspector general will conduct an investigation into the break-in, the Air Force said in its statement. The plane is outfitted with secure communications, sleeping quarters and work tables, according to the US Air Force. The C-40 plane the intruder walked into is the Air Force equivalent of a 737 airliner, painted in the US government’s blue and white colour scheme, and is designed as an “office in the sky” for senior military, government leaders and members of Congress, NBC News reported. “I think everybody’s taking this very seriously, and the acting secretary of the Air Force and the Air Force chief of staff are going to order the Air Force inspector general to fully investigate this issue,” Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told reporters on Friday.Ĭommanders also ordered additional security measures at the base, Kirby said. This was first time he was flying on Air Force One after being sworn in as the 46th US President on January 20.Īfter gaining access to the airfield, the unarmed intruder then entered a C-40 aircraft from the 89th Airlift Wing, known as the “presidential wing,” officials said. President Joe Biden flew from the base to his home in Wilmington, Delaware, on Friday evening. Said said that to his knowledge Andrews had never before experienced such a lapse in security. There was no indication the suspect, who was not named, had links to extremist groups, base officials said.Ī US official told CBS News that the security breach did not impact the presidential fleet. As he walked back toward the security gate on the flight line he was stopped and arrested. The intruder walked to the back of the plane and left unchallenged after a few minutes. ![]() He walked onto the C-40 aircraft, which was open to facilitate a communications training session. Personnel at the 89th Air Wing passenger terminal recalled him entering the terminal, and he then slipped unnoticed onto the flight line through an 18-inch gap in a security fence gate that was not fully closed because of a "malfunction." His whereabouts for the next four hours could not be determined. "During questioning, (blank) said he came on base because he wanted to see airplanes."Īfter driving through the Virginia Gate at Andrews, the man drove to the base exchange, where surveillance camera footage later showed he spent about an hour before returning to his car. "The evidence supports the conclusion that (blank) was simply wandering around the base and did not enter the base to meet anyone," the report said. His purpose could not be definitively determined. He did no harm and the Air Force investigation report, which was heavily censored by the Air Force before it was released Thursday, concluded that he had no plan to cause harm to Air Force personnel or equipment. Unimpeded, the unarmed intruder got aboard a C-40, a transport jet primarily used by members of the Cabinet, Congress and military combatant commanders. "That area is exceptionally secure," he said. Said said the modified Boeing 747 that serves as Air Force One for presidential travel was never at risk and that it is kept behind more layers of protection at Andrews. "The good news is, once alerted, security forces apprehended him pretty darned quickly - the minute he came off the plane," he said.
